The 4739 Luthorian Parliamentary Election was an election held in 4739 with all 150 seats in the Imperial Diet of Luthori up for election.

Context[]

Jackson I Cabinet []

The previous election led to the formation of the right-wing to far-right Jackson I Cabinet. The cabinet continued the liberal reforms engaged by its predecessor and removed tuition subsidies for most families, de-regulated stock exchanges, privatised some state-owned industries and increased retirement age. The cabinet also passed reactionary reforms, banning homosexuals from entering in the military, implemented work for able-bodied prisoners.

The Imperator was Jonathan Martin of the Liberal Party.

Public transport strikes[]

In May 4738, following the new governmental reform where public transports become "user-pay" instead of being fully subsidised, the Transport Working Union confirmed that 51.7 % of all members have voted for strike action. Some buses and train drivers feared they might lose their job following a decrease in the demand for public transport due to increased ticket costs for the users. The Government estimated that 15 % of bus and 10 % of train personnel went on strike on the 25th of May.

In response, the government implemented a full subsidisation for people with low-incomes, with the remainder "user-pays”, done via a National Travel Card for those in receipt of certain welfare benefits.

However, the government gave permission to the employers to dismiss employees that went on strike within the next 30 days. This authorisation was be reviewed daily and could be extended or withdrawn.

Return of the HLC, Formation of the Holy Bloc, and Rise of Far-Right[]

In August 4737, the HLC returned to the political landscape of Luthori, following a 60-year absence. With the HLC's return, two more far-right parties emerged: the LUF and NLP. Both parties join with the HLC in a new far-right bloc known as the Holy Bloc.
