The 4997 Luthorian parliamentary election was held on April 5, 4997 to elect all 300 members of the Imperial Diet of the Holy Luthorian Empire.
The Luthorian Socialist Party made an enormous rise of around 11% to successfully win the election. In a similar matter, the Social Democratic Party and White Rose made similar bounces to claim their roles.
However, it was devastating for the ruling Liberals, who lost nearly a third of their seats and only have 55 seats to back their Sambrook II cabinet. It was the worst election for the party since 4980, the first election they contested.
Forward!, a new party created by former LP members, gained 9.82% of the votes and entered the Diet.
The election was called for by the Luthorian Socialist Party after the Luthorian Conservatives were dissolved and the foundation of Forward!. It was backed by the Liberal Party and Forward! with a total of 166 votes in favour, with all other parties abstaining,
It is widely believed that the Sambrook government’s decision to privatise healthcares via the ducal governments was met with intense opposition from both the public and opposition. This has many supporting points which verifies this theory:
- Turnout leapt up from a meagre 16% to almost 45%. Considering that previous elections have had a consistently low level of turnout, this is quite a surprising event.
- The three most-voted parties all opposed the privatisation of healthcare. Furthermore, the LSP and SDP are both economically centre-left and socialist parties.
- The Liberals were the only party to see enormous declines. If this had been a collapse of non-progressive parties, Forward! would have NOT gained their 30 seats.
The White Rose probably profited more from the disappearance of viable opponents in the economic right, as the LCP failed to contest the election and the NRP was in favour of private healthcare.
