Aldegar (al.də'gɑr; Aldegarian: Aldegar, Aldegār) is a country in Central Seleya. Spanning a large isthmus as well as the island of Somasi, the Aldegarian mainland separates North Seleya from South Seleya. Aldegar is bordered by Tukarali to the north, the Schismatic Sea to the east, Mordusia and Saridan to the south and the Aldegarian Gulf to the west.

During ancient history, Aldegar was the centre of several large empires often referred to collectively as the Aldegarian empires beginning with the Kemokian Empire in 699 BCE. During this period, the Prophet Shapur founded Yazdism and it was spread throughout the region by Kurosh Shah. After the fall of the Kemokians, the region came under the control of the Mu-Tze Khanate.

Later in middle history, Aldegar was the centre of two further notable empires under the Rostamid dynasty and the Shahnazid dynasty. During this period, Hosianism arrived in the region from Badara. In 2042 the Shahnazids were overthrown and the First Republic of Aldegar was created, sparking the beginning of three millennia of conflict between monarchism and republicanism within the country.

In the period since the establishment of the First Republic, Aldegar been ruled by numerous imperial dynasties usually led by the Shah. Notable examples include the Tawanid dynasty and the Pesuna dynasty. In addition there have been over a dozen republican systems of government with the longest being the Third Republic as well as numerous periods of dictatorship.

The construction of the Aldegar Canal in 2403 was a key moment in the country's economic and political development and made it a central link between the Eastern and Western hemispheres. Especially since the initial nationalisation of the canal in 3573, it has been central to the national economy and thousands of ships traverse the canal every year. In spite of this Aldegar has struggled to achieve long-term economic stability and remains a "developing country" by most measures.

At present the country is governed through a unique political framework termed the "non-partisan republic". Following a period of brief political instability, political parties were officially banned in 4871 and the collective decision-making Shewra became the formal head of state as part of a new constitutional settlement. For forty years after the new constitution was promulgated, Shahram Jafarnejad served uninterrupted as President.

During this period Aldegar has become a notable voice in Seleyan and international politics, advocating for a united continent and the rule of international law. In line with the latter principle the country was twice elected to the World Congress Security Council for the 51st and 52nd sessions as well as hosting the Ramsāhreza Conference that led to a landmark nuclear arms reduction agreement between Dorvik, Hutori and Yingdala.

Aldegarian people constitute the majority of the country's population though there are notable ethnic minority communities such as the Dudmani and the Mu-Tze people. Aldegar's official national language is Aldegarian, one of the oldest living languages in the world and is written in the ancient Aldegarian script.

History

The first major settlements in Aldegar date back to at least the first millenium BCE. The Aldegarian people are believed to have arrived in the region from Majatra around this time. Eventually they established several major empires centred in the region, particularly the Kemokian Empire.

Between the third and eight centuries CE, the region came under the control of the Mu-Tze Khanate before Aldegarians re-established their control through the Rostamid and Shahnazid dynasties.

The fall of the Shahnazid led to the establishment of the First Aldegarian Republic in the 21st century. Since then the Aldegarian monarchy has been restored several times, notably under the rule of the House of Pesuna. Despite these restorations (some more successful and long-lasting than others), Aldegar has operated primarily as a republic since the fall of the Shahnazid dynasty and continues to have a republican political structure today.

Topography of Aldegar

Aldegar's geography varies by region and the island of Somasi in particular has a somewhat different geography from the rest of the country. In the southern regions of the country, the terrain is dominated by desert.

Major population centres are most common in the basins that exist outside of these regions. The country is bisected by a long mountain range with a different climate from the rest of the country. In the mountainous regions, which have traditionally divided the country, temperatures are much cooler. Due to Aldegar's position on the equator, it experiences little variation in daylight hours.

Government and politics

For several years since the creation of the current republic, the country has operated a unique political system known as "non partisan democracy". Under this political system, all political parties and factions are strictly banned and public officials are elected only as independent candidates at all levels of government.

Aldegar's head of state is the Shewra, a collective decision-making composed of a number of political officials, religious leaders, judges and members of the public. In practice the body has little practical power and mainly acts as an advisory body to the cabinet led by the President. Unlike in many other countries, the Aldegarian President is the head of government and is elected by the national legislature: the Parliament.

Due to the explicitly non-partisan nature of the Aldegarian political system, it is not necessarily clear who will become President based on the results of an election because no party structure or leadership exists. Since the current system has existed though, Shahram Jafarnejad has served as President and commanded the overwhelming support of the legislature.

Politics and elections

Political parties are officially banned under the Aldegarian constitution. Under the non-partisan system of government promulgated as part of the current republic, partisanship and political parties are banned and no candidate for public office is permitted to align with a political party or faction.

Administrative divisions

The first-level administrative division in Aldegar have been known by a variety of terms in both Aldegarian and Luthorian. At present they are officially known as asetans, rendered into Luthorian as "provinces". In the past, the term satrapy was used in both languages and this term has been translated as "province" too. Aldegar is a unitary state and the provinces do not hold any constitutional power, rather they are entitled to legislate in areas specifically devolved to them by the national government.

Historically and contemporarily, the Aldegar Canal has been a central part of the Aldegarian economy since its completion and especially since its nationalisation. In addition to the revenue associated with the canal, numerous related industries have prospered in proximity to it, such as shipbuilding and other defence industries.
