Alduria (al'djʊr.i:.ə, Canrillaise: Aldurie), officially known as the Republic of Alduria (Canrillaise: République d'Aldurie), is a country located in South Seleya. Part of the broader cultural region of Canrille, Alduria is bordered by Mordusia to the north, Rildanor and Kanjor to the east and the South Ocean to the south and west.

The indigenous peoples of Alduria, particularly the Anti and Imiri people, have a history in the region dating back millennia however the modern Aldurian state emerged after the colonisation of the region by the Selucian Empire in the 19th century. Alongside the other countries of southern Seleya, the Canrillaise people became the dominant group in Alduria following the collapse of the Empire.

Since then the country has been united politically with Kanjor, Lourenne and Rildanor on several occasions to form various incarnations of Canrille. During this time the country has been ruled both as a monarchy and as a republic. Divisions along these lines remain a key feature of Aldurian politics.

In comparison to the other Canrillaise countries, particularly Lourenne, Alduria has a relatively small population and economy. Like many of the countries in the wider region, it is usually classed as a developing country by international organisations and remains reliant on agriculture for much of its economic output.

Although the indigenous minorities remain in the country, most Aldurian people identify as ethnically or culturally Canrillaise. Like other Canrillaise countries, the majority of the population belongs to the Aurorian Patriarchal Church and the Theognosian Rite in particular. Alduria has experienced cultural influence from neighbouring Mordusia too. The government of Alduria follows a route of promoting state atheism, while allowing people to express their personal beliefs in private settings.

Government and politics

Government

The Constitution of the Republic of Alduria proscribes a semi-presidential democratic republic. The formal head of state is the President of the Republic who is popularly elected by the people of Alduria for a 6 year term (currently). The President serves as a potent and influential political leader and has a wide range of powers such as serving as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Alduria, the chief representative of Alduria on the international and regional stage as well as several vital functions and chief policy director of the Aldurian government. The President resides in the Presidential Residence (Canrillaise: Résidence présidentielle) located in the Antitou arrondisment of Aldurville. The Presidential Residence was initially built in the early 21st century and has often served as the residence or an important political place for heads of state and heads of government since its inception.

The Prime Minister of the Republic is appointed by the Parliament with recommendation and consent of the President, giving the President the "key-maker" powers within the constitution of the nation. The Prime Minister is the so-called "day-to-day" operator of the Aldurian government and often hails from the largest party or the leader of the coalition should that be necessary. The Prime Minister is assisted by the cabinet which is often called the "Council of Ministers" (Canrillaise: Conseil des ministres) which consists of appointed officials designed to assist the Prime Minister in carry out their duties.

Administrative divisions

Alduria is divided into 5 Departments (Canrillaise: Département) which are: Arcogne (located in the northwest of the country), Mondalat (located in the southwest of the country), Nouvelle Orange (located in the north central part of the country), Bendérie (located in the south central part of the country) and La Vallée sometimes called Vallée Zanyal (located in the eastern part of the country). La Vallée borders both Rildanor and Kanjor. Each Department has an elected Governor and an elected Departmental Council whose composition is heavily dependent on the department's population.

Underneath the Department's are Province's which are the second level sub-division and possess a provincial governor and a provincial council. Province's are further divided into either districts (rural and non-metropolitan) and metropolitan districts known in Canrillaise as arrondissement which possess no elected officials and are dependent on provinces and departments for their operation. Underneath districts and metropolitan districts are canton's which are smaller sub-divisions similar to villages and smaller cities, some of these canton's have locally elected officials such as Mayors and the like.

Military and law enforcement

Military

The Armed Forces of Alduria (Canrillaise: Forces armées d'Aldurie) is comprised of 3 branches: the Aldurian Army (Canrillaise: Armée aldurienne), the Aldurian Navy (Canrillaise: Marine aldurienne) and the Aldurian Air Force (Canrillaise: Force aérienne aldurienne). The Aldurian Armed Forces is considered by Gath Defense Collective to be in a "...poor state of affairs. The Aldurian Armed Forces suffers from serious neglect, mismanagement and outright corruption." In November, 5279 a former Aldurian Army General, General Auguste de Orange-Levasseur, assumed power in a bloodless coup and made the reformation of the Armed Forces of Alduria at the top of priority list. The first thing that happened was the reformation of the Ministry of Defense into the Ministry of the Armed Forces and placed a level of civilian control over the armed forces, the first Minister of the Armed Forces was announced as Émilien Gérin-Lajoie duuring the d'Aurilmar Cabinet and his term was continued underneath the Aliker Cabinet.

General Matthieu Bessette was appointed in February, 5280 as the new Chief of the Defense Staff. The Defense Staff will act as the military day-to-day operator of the armed forces and will ultimately have command and control authority over the Armed Forces. President Orange-Levasseur also formed the Defense Council which will serve as the National security council of Alduria.

Demographics

According to the most recent census, the population of Alduria is 99,664,984.

Language

The dominant language in Alduria is Canrillaise, spoken by the vast majority of the population. Nonetheless, there are minority populations who speak Luthorian and Duntrekaans as well as various Malvic languages.

Religion

Mainstream Hosians account for over four-fifths of the Aldurian population. Historically, the Aurorian Patriarchal Church has played a significant role in the country and even today, around 73% of the population are members of the APC. The remaining Hosians are primarily Jacquards. In addition, approximately 13% of Aldurians describe themselves as Agathiste, a dualist faith. Although adherents often consider themselves Hosians, the government does not include them in the Hosian population for the sake of official statistics. Alduria has adopted a policy of state atheism, which restricts religious displays to a private setting.
