Baegul (Kyomal: 拜㐎, Draniano: Ganadarario) is the native featural alphabet of the Kyo and Draniano languages, as distinguished from logographic Yeongja characters. Baegul is used in modern times alongside Yeongja in a mixed-script system.
Baegul was first created in 1638 CE by Emperor Bokjong in an effort to destroy the power of the nobles and spur productivity and growth in the nation by increasing literacy and common access to education. The script was quickly undone and discouraged by his successors once the imperial state had been solidified, and remained only used by commoners for the next century. Following the attempted Aktu Reforms of the late 1860s under the Egelian-influenced King Yejong, Baegul was returned as the script of the state. After colonization it regained national status as a prominent script. Efforts were historically made to end the use of Yeongja and to write Kyomal solely using native characters; however these have since failed. Today both systems are used together.
Whilst it was designed to be used for the Kyo language, the alphabet has also been traditionally employed to write the Draniano language as well. In modern times, Draniano typically uses the Selucian alphabet, but for cultural and traditional purposes the use of Baegul remains. Baegul is called the Ganadarario in Draniano.
