Canrillaise people are an ethnic group based primarily in the nations of Alduria, Mordusia, Kanjor, Rildanor and Lourenne. Smaller communities also exist in nearby nations such as Indrala. Canrillaise people are closely associated with the state of Canrille which has existed in different forms throughout history and almost all speak the Canrillaise language. While there is a level of shared culture and history between all Canrillaise people, differences between nations are often highlighted by the usage of terms such as Canrillaise-Kanjorien in Kanjor, Canrillaise-Mordusienne in Mordusia, Canrillaise-Rildanoriennes in Rildanor or Canrillaise-Lourennais in Lourenne.

Appearance[]

Canrillaise people are defined primarily by their shared Canrillaise language rather than ancestry, and as such they differ widely in appearance. There are also significant regional differences. In Lourenne, due to millennia of intermarriage, Canrillasie people are often indistinguishable from the indigenous Orinco people, while in Kanjor, a nation where there has historically been little intermarriage between Selucian colonists and the Willitu people, they resemble mainland Selucians. All Canrillaise nations have been destinations of large-scale immigration from every continent, and as such a Canrillaise person can be of any race or combination of races.

History[]

Main article: History of Canrille

Canrillaise people trace their origins to the colonial empire established by the Selucian Kingdom of Calatia and its successor, the Selucian Empire. During the long period of Calatian and Selucian rule from 1504 to 1956 many colonists from the Selucian islands migrated to the conquered territories, bringing with them the Selucian language and the Hosian religion. In time the Calatian dialect of Selucian spoken in these territories evolved to form the Canrillaise language.

Canrilalise people form the majority of the population in the countries associated with the historic state of Canrille: Alduria, Kanjor, Lourenne and Rildanor. A sizeable Canrillaise minority also exists in the former Rildanorien colony of Noumonde. Canrillaise people are related to other ethnic groups such as Egelian people and Istalian people.

Language[]

Canrillaise people and culture is closely associated with the use of the Canrillaise language, though not all Canrillaise speakers consider themselves ethnically Canrillaise. A notable example are the Euphitriens in Saridan.

The Canrillaise language is a Selucian-based creole language, belonging to the Seleyo-Selucic (OOC Gallo-Romance) branch of the Selucic languages. Canrillaise shares features with the other creole languages derived from Selucian, namely Egelian and Tukarese, that set them apart from the South Selucic languages spoken in Majatra, such as the use of -s for pluralization (as opposed to -i), the weakening of some consonants, and the pronunciation of soft C as /t͡s/ or /s/ insead of /t͡ʃ/.

Diaspora[]

The most notable Canrillaise diaspora populations are in Mordusia and the former Rildanorien territory of Noumonde.
