Chikuga-no-miya (Kunikata: 筑賀宮) also known as House of Chikuga is the one of the five cadet branches of the House of Narinomiya, started by Prince Tadasane, who was the second son of Emperor Tadayori.
History[]
After the accession of Emperor Tadamasa, two cadet branches were created in the early years to consolidate the ruling power of the Maeshiro clan. These were the House of Chikuga, headed by his younger brother Prince Tadasane, and the House of Hishikawa , headed by his second son, Prince Yoshimasa. In the absence of an heir to the throne, a male member of the imperial family from one of these cadet branches would ascend to the throne.
