The government and politics of Cildania functions within the framework of a multi-party parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. Since the 5321 general election, Cildania has been recognised as a democracy by domestic and international media although various sources have noted problems for the country, including corruption, patronage networks and foreign interference.

Constitution[]

Cildania does not have a formal constitution in the style of many other countries. Cildanian constitutional law has largely evolved throughout the political history of the country across thousands of years. At present, a significant proportion of Cildania's constitutional framework dates to the period of dictatorship. Despite this, the immediate post-dictatorship period prompted numerous constitutional reforms, including the reorganisation of the state into a "Grand Principality".

Cildania is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy.

Grand Prince[]

Main article: Monarchy of Cildania

The Grand Prince is the head of state. At present, Cildania is the only country in the world with an elective monarchy at the national level. When the reigning Grand Prince dies, a specially convened coucil elects the next Grand Prince from among the five historic princely families. The current Grand Prince is Ġakbu Maria. In common with most constitutional monarchies, the role of the Grand Prince in political affairs is relatively limited. Despite this, there are a handful of areas where the Grand Prince engages in overtly political action.

Prime Minister[]

The head of government is the Prime Minister of Cildania. Under the Cildanian parliamentary system, the Prime Minister is the country's principal political leader and the chair of the cabinet, which is known as the Council of Ministers. The role of the Prime Minister evolved from the history of the dictatorship period. During this period, Cildania was formally a constitional monarchy. Nonetheless the Prince and the Prime Minister both exercised relatively unconstrained power over the country. In contrast, the modern role of the Prime Minister is relatively limited due to the significant power of the national legislature, the Council of Deputies.

Council of Ministers[]

Main article: Cabinet of Cildania

The national cabinet is the Council of Ministers. Like many other parliamentary systems of government, the Cildanian cabinet collectively possesses executive power. In practical terms, ministers exercise their political authority through their own ministerial departments and the Prime Minister exercises a number of additional powers. In contrast to other countries operating in a parliamentary system, Cildania has a relatively strong national legislature.
