The Hanzen Free State was a condominium between the nations of Indrala and Talmoria. During the colonial expansion in the 26th century, the two nations found themselves in conflict over two provinces. In order to avoid the escalation of conflict the two powers decided to form the Hanzen Free State as a joint protectorate. After the Talmorian Civil War (2783-2787) Talmoria's colonies were annexed by Zardugal, who replaced Talmoria as one of the two co-protectors of the Free State. Over time the former Free State effectively became an exclusively Zardic colony known as the Federated State of Hanzen, part of the Federated States of Dovani, leading to the Hanzen Conflict whereby the pan-Gao-Showa Gekokujō regime in Indrala invaded and forcefully annexed the Free State. With the fall of the Gekokujō Zardic rule was restored. The Hanzen Free State was formally reestablished in July 3348 during the Southern Hemisphere War as a de facto Indralan protectorate. With the end of the war in 3355 the independence of the Free State was officially recognized under the Treaty of Port Tackstov, and the Free State was merged with the South Dovani Republic to form the independent nation of Hanzen.
