The House of Appiano De Borromei (Istalian: Casa Appiano De Borromei or more rarely Casato degli Appiano De Borromei) is the ruling imperial house of Istalia since 5103. All the Emperors of the Istalians have belonged to the House of Appiano de Borromei, which previously has already been the Imperial dynasty of Istalia for more than 300 years between 4571 and 5891 under the First Istalian Empire, and briefly between 5074 and 5080 under the Second Istalian Empire. The closest relatives of the reigning monarch form the Imperial family, the innermost circle of the Imperial House whose members perform official engagements on behalf of the Crown (who are also the only ones entitled of a civil list or public emoluments).

It comes from the Appiano De Borromei family, a romulan family descending from ancient patrician families from Romula and Villaneddìa and became Imperial House of Istalia following the rise of Michele Appiano De Borromei to the dignity of Emperor of the Istalians on 1 September 4571[1]. Since then, also after the abolition of the First Empire, the family remained an important symbol of the monarchists and then of the Istalian nationalists[2], and it remained the natural choice as Imperial house of Istalia in occasion of the two Imperial Restorations[3][4].

Once elevated to the status of Imperial dynasty of Istalia, the House began to establish relationships with most of the other royal houses of Terra, both for personal and diplomatic interests, and it was just a o matter of time that members of the family began to marry with exponents of other dynasties, although, given the time, none of them was a marriage arranged for political purposes. The first marriage of this kind, and probably the most prestigious and illustrious one, was the the union of the future Nicola I with Princess Josephine of Hulstria, of the House of Rothingren-Traugott-Hjortson, cadet branch of the House of Rothingren-Traugott, one of the most illustrious dynasties of all times, founded by her father. Other marriage of this kind was the one between Nicola II and Mellony of Telamon and the one between Tommaso II and Eugenié of Rildanor. The brother of Tommaso II, Grand Prince Adriano, married the Duchess Viktoriana of Davostan-Kivonia and their daughter Joanna fouded the House of Almabore, cadet branch of both the Istalian and Davostan-Kivonian Houses.

History[]

Before the Imperial elevation[]

The Appiano De Borromei family boasts of ancient noble origins, having been the Appianius one of the ancient Romulan Princely Families, born after the Church's blessing and elevated to defenders of the Church during the distant centuries after the fall of the Augustan Empire. The De Borromei's, on the other hand, seem to have been an ancient patrician family from Trivendito, wealthy merchants and bankers from Vinesia. The union of the two families happened, however, quite recently, only in 4086, when Francesco Appiano married Letizia De Borromei, with a common agreement by the families to keep both names.
Appiano Princes during the centuries managed to maintain the control of several little feuds in the Mezzodiurno countryside while at the beginning of the contemporary era they launched themself in several industrial activities which evolves and changed century after century alongside the continuosly managing of the large land estates. The Appiano's were among the Romulan Noble Families which shared at the end of 19th century the power in Romula with the Quanzarian Empire and then the Quanzar Emirate, trying for centuries to resist under the foreigner domination. The Appiano's have their own city residence in Rome, Appiano Palace, built between 1791 and 1811.

The De Borromei's family, instead, arose among the merchant selucian nobility of the at the time Marittime Republic of Vinesia. The De Borromei's boast four members who acted during the time as Doge of Vinesia, the highest city-state's authority and maintained a large influence on the city also under the Quanzarian dominion. Indeed, the De Borromei family gained a lot lending great sum of money to the Quanzar Emirs. In the contemporary era the De Borromei family dedicated themself to the banking activity and then to the commercial one. An uncle of Letizia De Borromei, spouse of Francesco Appiano, as tramanded among the family generations, seems to have been a political collaborator of Alessandro Senna, also undersecretary during one of the governments of the beloved Father of the "New Fourth Republic". The Appiano's boast also a continusly presence among the ranks of the Istalian Armed Forces since the time of the Istalian Reconquest of the nation.

The elevation to Imperial Family of Istalia[]

In 4552, Michele Appiano De Borromei, at the time Squadron General of the Istalian Air Force, led several officers of the Armed Forces and many anti-Thellerist politicians in founding a new political movement, Glory and Rebirth. Michele Appiano De Borromei with a great charisma was able to carry large crowd on the streets and squares and to gain confidence and popular support: once elected first Head of the State of the Fifth Republic, which he founded, he led Istalia for almost 20 years gaining three consecutive elections and assuming the role of veritable "Benevolent Guardian of the Country"[5]. When the last Congress of the Fifth Republic declared in 4571 Michele Appiano De Borromei first Emperor of the Istalians, his family was elevated to the status of Imperial dynasty of the First Istalian Empire.

The House of Appiano De Borromei remained on the throne of Istalia until 4981 when the First Empire was abolished[6]. The family, however, due to the very peaceful transition to the Sixth Republic, was allowed to continue to live in Istalia as private citizens focusing on the management of their assets and economic activities. Despite the republican regime didn't adopted any official measures to limit the freedoms of the family and of its members, unofficially they were barred from a military career in the Armed Forces.

The family, however, despite its members tried to keep a low profile, remained always an important symbol for the monarchists and then of Istalian nationalist under the Union of Quanzar and Alaria. When the monarchy was restored in 5074[7], the House come back to be Imperial dynasty of the short-living Second Istalian Empire[8]. It was thanks to an unusual agreement with the Istalian nationalists and the largest of the far-leftist parties that abolished the Empire in 5080 in favor of the Istalian Union of Quanzar and Alaria that the family, once again, was allowed to live in Istalia as private citizens unharmed. This allowed the family to be even more involved in the nationalist struggle to restore an Istalian nation and the monarchy, a goal achieved in 5103 when the Third, and current, Istalian Empire was restored with the House of Appiano De Borromei once again elevated for the third time to the status of Imperial dynasty of Istalia[9].

Surname Al Madyan-Appiano De Borromei[]

Al Madyan-Appiano De Borromei is the personal surname used by the descendants of Empress Michela I and Prince Consort Ghazi, Duke of Marsama[10].
On 8 October 4659 Princess Michela, daughter of Emperor Alessandro II, married the Air Force's captain Ghazi Ben Hassan Al Madyan and when their first and only child Prince Tommaso was born the couple agreed to give him as personal surname an union of both their family names.
As per decision of Michela when she ascended to the Throne, however, while not changing the name of the dynasty, she changed the surname of her direct descendants to Al Madyan-Appiano De Borromei.
