Hulstria, officially known as the State of Hulstria (High-Hulstrian: Hulstrischer Staat / Staat Hulstrien / Staat Hulstria) and commonly called Hulstria, is a sovereign state located on the eastern coast of Dovani. It is bordered by Kazulia to the north, Sekowo to the south, Ostland to the east. On its western shores it is bordered by the Anantonese Ocean; a major reason for its development. Hulstria has gone by several names throughout its history including Greater Hulstria, Gishoto, Gao-Soto, Hulstria and Gao-Soto, and several others.
Hulstria was once a world leading superpower alongside the Holy Luthori Empire, which colonized the nation. Hulstria has long had a divided history when it comes to ethnicity, largely split between Hulstrians and the Kunihito people. In modern times this conflict subsided as a result of the decline of the Hulstrians and the emergence of the mixed Hulstro-Showan ethnic group.
However in comparison to other neighboring countries, the establishment of a Hulstrian suprematist regime in 5348-5359 by Klaus Eliya, ended any effort of establishing a democratization of the country.
With the implementation of the plurinational state of Hulstria (5361-5422), there has been an attempt to create of democracy that would last hundreds of years. These plans however, were disrupted by the resurgence of the fascists and the re-construction of an ultranationalist ethnostate (5422).
Etymology and Names[]
The name "Hulsrtia" comes from the Dundorfian term "Hulsterreich" which means "realm of Hulster". John Hulster was the Consul who endorsed Christopher Dove's expedition that marked the first arrival of the Artanian people in the Dovanian constinent. The term is often used to refer to the whole country, but the historical region of Hulstria is much smaller.
"Mikuni" is a Kunikata world meaning "three lands", chiefly the Schneeberger region, the plains on its west and those on its east.
People of Artanian descend tend to use the term "Hulstria", while "Mikuni" is in use among Kunihito and some mixed people. "Mikuni" and "Hulstria" can be considered synonyms in Luthorian, as they refer to the same country.
Many Luthorian sources use the name "Hulstria and Gao-Soto". "Gao-Soto" (also pronounced "Gishoto" in the past) was the name of an old Kunikata-speaking pre-Dovanian Empire, but now the name it is used to indicate only the nine authonous districts in the country's south-east.
History[]
The country is one of the world's historic cradles of civilisation, being the urheimat of the Gao-Showa peoples and the heartland of the later Empire of Gao-Soto. Christopher Dove became the first Artanian to set foot in the 'New World' when he made landfall in the country in 1493; the ensuing Luthorian colonisation and settlement from Dundorfians fleeing religious persecution culminated in the dissolution of the Empire of Gao-Soto in 1560 and its annexation to Luthori.
These Dundorfian settlers, having developed a Hulstrian identity, would later revolt against Luthorian rule and win their independence in 1749, establishing the Hulstrian Empire. The following centuries would see a rapprochement between Hulstria and Luthori, with the two becoming close allies; and, during the Second Greater Hulstrian period, the world's leading superpowers, with a brief period of personal union under Heinrich I.
Decades of increasing Kunihito political consciousness after centuries of exclusion from power came to a head in 3385, in a ground-breaking election result that saw much of the Greater Hulstrian establishment swept away, when the Kokumin Doumei joined with the radicalised Hulstrian working class to take power and re-establish the Empire of Gao-Soto within a dual monarchy in the form of the Imperial Crownlands of Hulstria and Gao-Soto.
Since the death of fascist leader Klaus Eliya in 5359, civil wars have destroyed the country's prosperity and stability. From 5362 onwards, a multi-ethnic parliamentary republic was gradually established, only to collapse again in 5422.
Since then, post-eliyan fascists have formed a new alliance, the so called Fascist Party of Hulstria and seized power of the corrupt and unstable republic in 5422.
Government and Politics[]
The State of Hulstria (High-Hulstrian/Dundorfian: "Hulstrischer Staat / Staat Hulstrien / Staat Hulstria", ) is an ethnic people's state under the leadership of the great hulstrian leader Hans von Burg. The state of Hulstria is a totalitarian fascist dictatorship, created from the Emergency Laws of 5422. In March 5422, a new constitution was adopted that finally dissolved the previously existing parliamentary democracy and replaced it with an ethnostate featuring Hulstrian supremacism.
The fascist party of Hulstria rules absolutely through the so-called Circle of Wise Men. The Circle of Wise Men is an organ of pseudo-legislature and serves to underpin the fascist claim to power.
In contrast to the legislative bodies of other countries, the members of the Circle of Wise Men are appointed for life. In the event of a desceased member or resignation due to health reasons, the closest family member according to generational succession will be appointed to the previous position.
CULTURAL REGIONS[]
Since 5422 all previous federal territories have been abolished and replaced by a system of cultural regions, featuring local distinctness.

Autonomy of Gao-Soto[]
The nine districts of Mitrania, Syakusen-Graaffsberg Metropolis, Highlands, Upper Plain, Straussia, Akihito, Eastern Fields, Veilchenberg and Hilgar are more culturally Gao-Showan. In 5400-5408 the districts tried to seceed from Mikuni-Hulstria to create their own polity. The separatist country was however never internationally recognised, and in 5408 the separatists decided to give up their independence with the Treaty of Schärbach, which garanted the districts a special autonomous status together with the possibility to elect their own parliament. Since 5408 the subnational Parliament of Gao-Soto meats in
Military[]
The Hulstrian Army is the sole army of the State of Hulstria and operates as its police force as well. From 5422 on forward, the government established various military facilities, to strengthen domestic arms production. The military bolsters several professional elite Panzer divisions as well as a well trained Air Force using the latest Hulstrofighters. Hulstrian defence forces' budget in 5422 corresponded to approximately 25,44% of national GDP.
The hulstrische Marine is a developing navy whose active roster includes frigates, submarines and many small craft capable of defening the country from naval attack.
Culture[]
The culture of Hulstria is strongly marked by the country's nature as a melting pot between the Western Hulstrian culture and the Eastern Kunihito culture. Each of the two historical ethnic groups have their own culture which is celebrated across the nation. The Hulstrian culture, having been dominant while the country was known as Greater Hulstria, has a longstanding history, leaving its imprint in architecture and culture in most parts of the nation. Hulstrain "high culture" is marked by many famous composers of classical music, grand architecture, and a particular love of coffee and certain meat dishes. Intricately linked with the nation's monarchical heritage, Hulstrian culture contains many subtle Rothingrenist overtones even among those who are less supportive of the Rothingrens. This also links it to Kunihito culture, which carries the heritage of the medieval Empire of Gao-Soto, revived under the Okatori Clan. Kunihito high culture has brought forth famous poets, a distinctive Eastern cuisine and its own typical architectural and cultural forms. It is also tied up with elements of the Kamist faith and to a lesser extent with Jienist traditions. The elites of both cultures, united by certain aristocratic, monarchist and traditional values, have always felt some kinship going back to the period of the first dual monarchy.
Inter-ethnic Conflicts[]
Since the first Empire of Hulstria, Apartheid has been the official ethnic policy of the region until the emergence of Septembrism.
With the declaration of the Culture War by Klaus Eliya on December 1, 5350 and the re-enactment of slavery for the Kunihito people on July 21, 5351, a de facto two-class system was recreated. In this racist system, the Kunihito were used as enslaved labor and were not allowed to participate in the urban life of the Hulstrians.
A Post Civil War Constitution in the multi-ethnic republic of 5361 banned discrimination, segregation and slavery, but ethnic Kunihito still faced economic disadvantage.
After the seize of power by the post-eliyan fascist movement in 5422, hard labor and extermination were reintroduced into Hulstrian society and an ethnic class system was established. Since then Kunikito (Kunihito) are second, even third class subjects in constant serfdom or enslavement.
Demographics[]
Mikuni-Hulstria has a population of 107 million, many of which still live in rural areas. The modern population has a mixed Artanian and indigenous Gao-Showan heriage. Despite this, less than 41% of the population self-identifies as "mixed", while the rest of the population still identifies as either Hulstrian or Mikunian. The largest minority group in the country is the Sekowans, while the fastets growing one is the Kyo due to recent immigration trends.
Language[]
Two languages are widely spoken in the country: hulstrian form of Dundorfian, and the indigenous Kunikata language. Standard Kunikata is a dying language used mostly in formal speech, while daily conversations are held in Hulstro-Mikunian language, a mixed Dundorfian-Kunikata language.

Geography and Climate[]
Climate[]
As a country in the far north of Terra (the arctic cicrle crosses the country in its far north-western tip), Hulstria-Mikuni is a quite a cool country and during the long winter temperatures are generally below freezing causing impressive snow storms. During the summer however the climate is pleasant with the south of the country often becoming quite warm due to the ocean currents bringing warm water up from the equator. The country stretches between 67° and 57°06′ N of latitude. The climate is therefore classified as oceanic (Köppen's Cfb to Cfc) along the south-eastern coast, while the rest of the country has a continental (Dfb to Dfc) climate, with tundra and ice caps on high elevations.
Geography[]
Hulstria is a fairly mountainous nation because of its location on the Schnee-Berge Mountain range, the local name of the Great Barrier Range. The coastal regions of Budenlar and Kuratha are quite flat with the land slowly rising from the coast into the rolling hills of the interior. Further inland the regions of Hulstria and Mitrania are dominated by picturesque snow-capped mountains. Most cities are in the foothills to the west with the east being dominated by the Schnee-Berge Mountains, too steep in many cases to build on or farm, although its farming communities in the valleys feed much of the region. Much of Hilgar lies on the other side of the barrier mountains and it flattens out into the Great North Dovani Plain, which continues into Ostland.
Economy[]
Mikuni-Hulstria has a large and highly developed economy centered around manufacturing and exports. The nation was the first of the economies of Dovani to undergo industrialisation and since that time been the pre-eminent economic power of the region, in close competition with Dankuk. The nation is also noted for the close co-operation between the government, corporations and unions, a system which many theorise has helped the nation achieve its pre-eminent economic position today. The system in a large part evolved from the feudalistic systems of both the Hulstrian and Gao-Showa societies with both the government and economy being for a large part under the direct control or influence of a few leading families.
Landmarks of Hulstria and Gao-Soto[]
Hulstria and Gao-Soto is a nation legendary and internationally acclaimed for its many landmarks. Due to the nation's history and its infusion of both Hulstrian and Gao-Showa cultures, many unique structures dot its landscape. Equally impressive is the landscape itself. Hulstria stretches from the beautiful beaches of Luthorische Bai and Marchau to the rolling hills of Rothingren and Graaffsberg and all the way up into the scenic mountains surrounding the capital of Kien in the Kiennese Plain. Hulstria is, of course, most known for its Imperial history and castles and palaces, like Fliederbrunn Palace, are popular for tourists to visit, while others like, Phönixstein Castle, are famed landmarks even though they are not open to the public.
