The Kalistani Music Industry is the largest music industry in Terra. It has operated for centuries, producing the bulk of Terra's music, and is responsible for the development of several genres of music, to include Alternative rock, Reggae, Electronica and Retro-Futurism, Funk, Two-Tone Ska and KME.

As of 4903, the Kalistani Music Industry is composed of numerous independent and regional record labels, while the major labels are Kalistani Music Industry Records based in Kaliburg, Artists' Recording Cooperative Records, La Tienda Discos Records both based in Sulari and most recently Vrassa District Records Ltd. based in Vrassa City.

Audiences and Impact[edit | edit source]

These four Record labels each have different audiences in the Republic, and have various business models, ranging from the more traditional models (KMI and VDR) to a more artist centered model (ARC and LTD Records).

KMI primarily caters to Rock and R&B fans and produces music from established genres, and despite its recent eclipse by the newer labels, is still the flagship label in the Republic, with the widest distribution, the largest talent pool, and the most prestigious reputation. ARC, which primarily distributes hard rock, punk and ska, is seen as the primary Alternative music outlet (in Kalistani terms), and often offers better royalties to artists, though the distribution and the prestige have never been at KMI levels.

LTD Records was a record label which grew up around the Kalistani Musica Egelian Movement. It was designed by and for KME artists, and is widely seen as a sister label with ARC, rather than a competitor. VDR is a newer local label, who struck it big with the rise of Alt-Folk in the Republic and the career of Joanie Yeardly. Their music tends to be more oriented at independent artists from Vrassa and Neveras, though some artists who are beginning to identify with Alt-Folk as a subgenre are beginning to seek deals with VDR Limited.

Kalistani Institutions[edit | edit source]

Music Festivals[edit | edit source]

Besides the major labels, several other institutions are deeply related to the Kalistani Music Industry. Two of the main ones are the Kalistani Radio and Television Network which is the primary method of publication and popularization of Kalistani Music, and GanJam which is a multi day music and art festival which takes place regularly in Kalistan, and features primarily Kalistani acts over three or four days, and is usually co-sponsored by the Organization of Drug Exporting Nations in Kalistan.

The Kalistani Music Industry is also indirectly related to supporting The Festival of Music Arts in Terra, which Kalistani acts have won four times, making it, by far the most dominant competitor in that contest.

Another huge Music festival in Kalistan is the annual Sulari Sunsplash, which takes place in mid spring annually in Sulari.

KRTVN[edit | edit source]

KRTVN, especially Television Channel 7, or "M7" primarily plays music videos throughout the day and has music related programming. The Radio Channel 1, which plays predominantly Alternative Rock, is considered the Flagship station on the radio, and much of the most popular music in the Republic plays there, while other channels cater to more specific tastes of music lovers in Kalistan.

Radio Kaliburg[edit | edit source]

In addition, Radio Kaliburg, which is operated primarily by Shortwave from Kaliburg, is controlled by the Socialist Party of Kalistan, and serves primarily as a music and propaganda station. As it is a party owned and operated station it remains entirely outside of the control of the KRTVN Ombudsman, and therefore, tends to be entirely and unapologetically partisan, pro Kalistan, and pro Socialism. Radio Kaliburg's tag line is "Seleya's Only Alternative" which would contradict the fact that KRTVN Radio 1 is the Alternative Radio Station in the Republic, except KRTVN Radio is rarely heard outside of FM radio range, while Radio Kaliburg is broadcast to the entire world.

Global Music Hall of Fame[edit | edit source]

The Global Music Hall of Fame in Luxon was originally intended as a Hall of Fame for international Musicians. As it was never used for these purposes, Most of the entrants in the GMHoF are Kalistani in Origin. The GMHoF Amphitheater has served as the host for FOMAT in Kalistan, and the seating capacity of the Amphitheater is more than 30,000.

Music Scenes in Kalistan[edit | edit source]

The primary divisions in Kalistan lie along virtual fault lines of music scenes. These musical cleavages are primarily geographical, and crossing from one's home scene into another is seen as an increase of status. The most successful bands in Kalistan have made international Tours, and have transcended the Republic all together.

Kaliburg[edit | edit source]

The Kaliburg "scene" is considered the most important location for Music in the Republic. While the prestige of the Capital has not diminished, its importance to Kalistani music is in the process of being eclipsed. The vast majority of bands from Kaliburg are Alternative Rock, reggae, and hip hop musicians, though there are also large electronica and RF followings there too. The most prestigious venues are in the capital as well, and for people in other scenes, playing in Kaliburg is widely considered a mark of success.

The hip hop and R&B scenes are especially important in Kaliburg, which produced FOMAT winner D'Ante and the Revolutionaries, as well as Bandstand and Idris Olofuote. In addition, Hutori Acts The Gang and the First FOMAT contest winner, Erica Secord, both settled in Kaliburg, though the Gang eventually relocated to Sulari when the two-tone Ska scene revived in the 4800s.

Sulari[edit | edit source]

Largely considered Kalistan's Second City, Sulari is home to primarily alternative Rock, punk, KME and ska. Scenes affiliated with Sulari are the Yoshimi Scene, long the home of hard rock in the Republic, as well as the newer Dana Suldanor Scene, following the return of two-tone ska in the late 4800s. Salgo is a major example of the hard rock sound from Sulari.

The most important music in recent decades has come from Suldanor, being the home of both Madysin Shakespeare, who is widely considered one of the most successful musicians in Kalistani History, as well as La Sol, both of whom won FOMAT contests. Red Tone, another FOMAT winner is also from Suldanor, though is based in Dana.

The Sulari Scene is also the home base of Gaduri musicians when they visit the Republic, including Los Angeles Rojos, Hola Unicorn! and Chaparra, all of whom have made either movies or records in the Republic. Much of Sulari's music, especially the KME from the area is largely influenced by Gaduri flavors.

Vrassa City[edit | edit source]

The new home of the Alt-Folk music scene, Vrassa City is largely considered a rustic and largely conservative city, with few musicians who come from there which are of interest to large Kalistani Artists. But this changed when Joanie Yardly burst out of this backwater onto Kalistani Radio and TV with her earnest alt-folk genre. Since 4902, Vrassa City has gained in importance in the Kalistani Music Industry, as artists who associate with Alt-Folk are relocating to the mountainous, heavily forested hotspot to record a more organic, stripped down sort of alternative rock for VDR Ltd.

Acts associated with this nascent Scene are Joanie Yeardly and Donnie Jorgenson, who is Hutori-born, but has lived in Neveras most of his life, both of whom recorded major records for VDR, as well as Dulnerstaad keyoardist Jennifer Stepanov. Other musicians have come from Vrassa, but their were associated with either Kaliburg or Sulari.

Foreign Influences[edit | edit source]

Kalistani music was largely influenced by Hawu Mumhenes in terms of Ska and Reggae, Luthorian punk rock in the development of Alternative in Kalistan, and Dundorf for electronica. But those forms all developed within Kalistan, and Kalistani music is entirely unrelated to whatever those countries have going on in their own music scenes now.

Most recently, however, Kalistan owes a great debt to Gaduridos for the diffusion of enthusiasm for Egelian Language music and Gaduri Sonic Aesthetic, including Cumbia, to Kalistan. Gaduri influence was crucial to the development of KME which was descended from the RF scene in Sulari, and there has been a close association between Kalistan and Gaduridos over this fraternal bond.

Foreign Acts have also relocated to the Republic permanently, and continue to influence Kalistani Music. Erica Secord's arrival in Kalistan and subsequent settlement in the Republic led to the Rise of Madysin Shakespeare and the development of a new flavor of pop music within the Republic. The Gang's arrival helped spur the Ska Revival of the 4800s, and Alternative Rock band Clash has also moved to Kalistan and intend to remain in the Republic. These bands have all been Hutori.

Some bands have has a significant influence on Kalistani Music. In the 4400s, the Valruzian band The Beat Bros, greatly influenced Kalistani music tastes, while Gaduri musicians Los Angeles Rojos, Griselda Diaz and her band Hola Unicorn! and Chaparra have all toured Kalistan extensively.
