His Imperial and Most Illustrious Lutheran Majesty, Defender of the Faith, by the Grace of God, Klaus Gustav IV, Emperor of Hulstria, His Royal Highness, Grand Duke of Sisula, His Royal Northern Highness Great Prince of Trigunia, His Royal & Supreme Majesty Archduke of Vorona (b. July 17th, 2803 at Schloss Fliederbrunn, Kien, Greater Hulstria - d. May 24th, 2892) was the reigning Emperor of Hulstria, Grand Duke of Sisula, and pretender to the Great Princedom of Trigunia as Great Prince; he was also the Archduke of Vorona, ruling as a dual monarchy with his consort, Janne II, in Vorona. Klaus Gustav IV was born to Godric II of Hulstria and Roberta Lusk, Viscountess of Ayelsbury in 2803 and was the younger brother to Archduke Karl of Hulstria, who was born three years before Klaus Gustav. Klaus Gustav's paternal grandparents were Alexander I of Hulstria and Anna Katharina, Countess of Kremfurt and his maternal grandparents were Marcus, Count of Ayelsbury and Dame Martha Douglas; Klaus Gustav was a descendant of Leopold II of Central Macon and Louis III of Solentia, among other former monarchs. Klaus Gustav married Princess Janne of the House of Bavoria, the ruling imperial family in the Archduchy of Vorona, in the spring of 2829; the couple had their first child and son, Archduke Maximilian, in September of 2830. They had their second child and only daughter a few years later, Archduchess Adela. In 2834 after the death of his older brother Archduke Karl, who was the Crown Prince of Hulstria throne at the time, Klaus Gustav become the new heir apparent to the thrones of Hulstria, Sisula and Trigunia, thus assuming the titles of the Crown Prince of Hulstria, Crown Duke of Sisula, and Hereditary Prince of Tirgith.

In 2856 Klaus Gustav ascended to the Hulstrian throne following the passing of his father, Godric II of Hulstria. The new Kaiser took on the regnal name of Klaus Gustav IV of Hulstria & I of Sisula & Trigunia; his wife, Princess Janne, nearly a decade earlier ascended to the throne in Vorona as Archduchess as Janne II of Vorona following a revolution that turned Vorona into a protestant, constitutional monarchy; Janne II overthrew her father, the absolutist Konrad I, in a bloodless coup. This as a result made Klaus Gustav IV the Archduke of Vorona in a dual monarchy; he became the first Hulstrian monarch since Heinrich I of Hulstria to have married a sitting sovereign and sat on their respective thrones. Despite Klaus Gustav reigning as a dual monarch in Vorona, Janne II did not rule as a dual monarch in Greater Hulstria when Klaus Gustav crowned.

The Hulstrian Court under Klaus Gustav IV was fairly stable and prosperous, with the House of Rothingren-Traugott establishing relations with the Valonen and Bavoria royal families on Dovani. Domestically the pro-royalist government remained firmly in control and under Klaus Gustav IV the Imperial Diet experienced a large rate of nobility participation within the government. Political instability would creep in during the Governor-Generalship of Friedrich Reding, who attempted to overthrow the cabinet government by installing an ultra-partisan coalition that angered many of the political elite. Klaus Gustav IV gave consent to the removal of the Governor-General when approached by then Staatsminister Bartholomäus von Strauss, who led the effort to remove Reding from office. Hulstrian politics would return to normalcy after Reding was outcasted but would experience a bout with radical republicans in the last years of Klaus Gustav's reign who wished to abolish the monarchy. The royalist bloc led by the Faschistische Gewalt-Partei and the Kaiserliche Hulsterreichische Partei, including support from the liberal and social democratic parties, was able to counter the republicans who soon imploded after their defeat at the hands of the royalists. The republican movement did not pose a serious threat to the monarch but is noted for being the first of its kind since the early reign of Heinrich I.

When Klaus Gustav IV passed away in May of 2892 his son Archduke Maximilian assumed the Hulstrian throne and when Janne II passed away, their daughter Adela became the new monarch of Vorona, thus establishing a new cadet branch of the House of Rothingren-Traugott with the House of Bavoria. This order of succession was determined early on by the imperial couple.

Early Life[]

Archduke Klaus Gustav was born on July, 17th, 2803, at Schloss Fliederbrunn to the then Godric, Crown Prince of Hulstria, and to Roberta Lusk, Viscountess of Ayelsbury; Klaus Gustav was born two years after the birth of his older brother, Archduke Karl, and thus was the youngest child of the family until 2806 when his younger sister, Archduchess Josephine, was born. As a child Archduke Klaus Gustav was noted to be very active and enjoyed to play with his older brother Karl and his cousin, Archduke Paul, in the large gardens of the Fliederbrunn Palace; his paternal grandfather, Alexander I of Hulstria taught Klaus at a young age the art of gardening and helped plant two trees with the Archduke, which still stand today near the north-western wing of the imperial palace. Klaus Gustav was considered to be very close to his father and wanted to travel with him whenever he went on foreign trips.

Klaus Gustav was tutored until he was eight years of age and attended Hulstrian boarding school until he was 19 when he enlisted in the Hulstrian Armed Forces; at the same time during his military training, he also attended university where he took up the studies of political science, government & politics, and medicine. However due to the the schedule Klaus Gustav had, he was unable to spend much time performing formal royal responsibilities with his older brother, Karl, Crown Prince of Hulstria. At the age of 24 he graduated from university, receiving high honors and a year later graduated from the army academy, earning the title of Staff Sergeant. Following these accomplishments, Klaus Gustav took up more responsibilities on behalf of his father, Godric II. With his experience in the armed forces Klaus Gustav acted as a representative of the Rothingren-Traugott durings military parades and commissions, among other military events. The Archduke also became a large patron of organizations and community groups that provided assistance to low-income families that had members of their family in the military. When Klaus Gustav became the Emperor of Hulstria he oversaw the construction of several new military bases in the eastern territories and off the coast Budenlar.

Marriage to Princess Janne of Vorona[]

Almost immediately following his time in the military, the Archduke took his gap year and travelled to various countries around Terra, including several consitutional monarchies. Klaus Gustav visited the Holy Luthori Empire, Malivia, Rilandor, and Vorona where in the latter he would meet his future consort. In 2825 Archduke Klaus Gustav went on travels to Dechow, the capital city of the Archduchy of Vorona and in his time there spent time with the ruling imperial family, the House of Bavoria, and the then Head of State of Vorona, Konrad I; the Bavorians hosted a State Dinner for the Hulstrian Archduke and there Klaus Gustav would meet for the first time Princess Janne von Bavoria, the middle child and daughter of Konrad I of Vorona. The two straight off were attracted to one another and expressed interest in a formal relationship however their religion, Lutheran and Catholic, respectively, caused a bit of a roadblock at first; the Writ on the Regulation to the Imperial Throne does not permit a heir to the throne to marry non-Protestant consorts and if one should marry a non-Protestant would be excluded by the line of succession. With Klaus Gustav being 2nd in line of succession to the throne, this issue was of importance to the House of Rothingren-Traugott; Princess Janne however without fuss converted to Lutheranism after the relationship went serious and talk of marriage was earnestly being discussed in royal circles. Emperor Godric II and Konrad I approved the marriage shortly after the chance; they also saw the happiness held by the couple and did not want to disturb that. With consent given for marriage, the two Monarchs, Godric II and Konrad I, agreed to strive for a better alliance between the two Houses; in April 2829 Klaus Gustav and Janne got married in Kien at the Hulstrian National Cathedral. Klaus Gustav following the marriage was given the title of the "Prince of Vorona" and Janne was given the title of the "Archduchess of Hulstria". A year after their marriage, they had their first child, Archduke Maximilian of Hulstria.

Following the birth of their son, Klaus Gustav ventured into various other patronages with his older brother Karl, the Crown Prince of Hulstria, to help and to take part in charitable organisations. The two brothers set up the "Royal Charities Foundation", a function that gives money to charity and for educational services around the country. Archduke Klaus Gustav would have to cease operations in the "Foundation" after Janne become pregnent once again in 2832; in 2833 later the imperial couple had their second child, a daughter, Archduchess Adela of Hulstria.

Crown Prince of Hulstria[]

In 2834 the Rothingren-Traugotts were devastated when Karl, the heir to the Hulstrian throne and Klaus Gustav's older brother, was mortally wounded in a gun accident at his private residence in Hulstria and died shortly after at a nearby hospital. The death plunged Greater Hulstria in mourning and the catapulted the international community into shock; the Hulstrian Imperial Family was also obviously hit hard by the death though remained intact and strong during the matter. Due to the death of the Crown Prince, Klaus Gustav was given the hereditary titles to the Hulstrian, Sisulan and Trigunian thrones as a result of his subsequent ascendance to the 1st in line of succession to those thrones. Klaus Gustav was noted to be very hard hit by the passing and was everly present during Karl's funeral proceedings. Princess Elizabeth Diggory, the wife of Karl and the last surviving member of the House of Diggory, the ruling family in Lodamun, transfered her titles to Klaus Gustav in the hopes he would revive that line in the future. Since the transfer of titles, Klaus Gustav has since been claimant to the throne in Lodamun yet does not actively pursue such a assertion.

Archduke Klaus Gustav, up until 2834, was not the Crown Prince and as such did not take part of the many of duties Karl nor was pampered to in the future run the Empire. The new Crown Prince had to radically revamp his royal responsibilities and to take a larger public role on behalf of his father and the Hulstrian Monarchy; the private Archduke was now the new center of attention in Hulstrian and international monarchist circles. While certainly Klaus Gustav had minor difficulty in this new role, he quickly adjusted. He became the central representative to the International Monarchist League for Greater Hulstria alongside members of the Imperial Hulstrian Party and the Fascist Authority Party and mingled with foreign royalists frequently. There were some rumors during the early years of Klaus as the Crown Prince that he would take up the regnal name of Karl IV after his older brother when he would become Emperor of Hulstria; there was a strong movement for this to happen though the Crown Prince did shut down these rumors, telling the Greater Hulstrian Chronicle in 2838 that he would take on the regnal name of Klaus Gustav IV, after Klaus Gustav III of Hulstria. When he eventually became Emperor, he did take up the latter regnal name.

Godric II of Hulstria by 2855 was going into the 41st year of his reign as Emperor of Hulstria though was growing old in age with the Crown Prince's father reaching the age of 87 in August of that same year. Despite the old age, the Crown Prince's father certainly did not cease royal duties nor cut down on scheduling; Klaus Gustav's father still travelled and held State Dinners for foreign Heads of State. In the winter of 2854, Godric II welcomed the Queen of Tukarali, Gloria I, and even before that in the spring of the same year welcomed the Grand Duke of Valonen, the father of Idda, Countess of Savonia, who would later on marry Klaus Gustav's son Maximilian. However by mid 2856 the Crown Prince's father began to show signs of illness and finally the armor began the crack in the Emperor's health; in August, shortly following his 88th birthday, was struck with a severe illness. For the remainder of the month, the Emperor would go in and out of the Kien Imperial Military Hospital for treatment. In mid September the Crown Prince's father passed away at Fliderbrunn Palace at the age of 88, 22 years after the death of Archduke Karl. Greater Hulstria went into mourning following the passing of Godric II, who still is considered by both monarchist analysts and by the court of public opinion one of Hulstria's greatest sovereigns. Obviously with this a large funeral succeeded his death and Klaus Gustav was formally coronated as the Emperor of Hulstria a month later, taking up the regnal name of "His Imperial and Most Illustrious Lutheran Majesty, Defender of the Faith, by the Grace of God, Klaus Gustav IV, Emperor of Hulstria". Klaus Gustav's coronation was attended by the top brass of the monarchist community including that of the top politicians of the day in Greater Hulstria. Needless to say, the new Emperor had large shoes to fill; his father was a monarchist icon within Hulstria. Godric II expanded by the influence of the Rothingren-Traugotts not seen since the times of Heinrich I of Hulstria; the creation of new cadet branches, alliances with other royal families, and peace within the Imperial Court marked the successes of his father. Klaus Gustav IV knew that the people, including His Imperials Majesty's Government had to have time to adjust to the new sovereign; to much of his surprise, the people immediately rallied behind the new Emperor. Klaus Gustav's calm and humble demeanor went over well with the citizenry though some viewed such demeanor as an indicator that the new sovereign was a "cold" figure.

In the early 2860s his son Maximilian, now the Crown Prince, married the Countess of Savonia, Idda von Valonen, and his daughter, Adela, married a Voronian Duke. Maximilian soon produced grand-children for the Emperor of Hulstria while Adela took her time to produce a heir to the throne in Vorona which she was designated upon birth to take up, eliminating the chance of a Hulstria-Vorona personal union. At home, Greater Hulstria remained with the domestic peace, and increase of noble presence within the Imperial Diet. The elections of the the Dukes of Anderinch and Labsburg at the top political office of the nation, the Governor-General of Greater Hulstria, continued the royalist dominance within the legislature. Despite the royalist hold, Klaus Gustav IV did not break apolitical status, and allign himself with these figures. On the international stage however, this was a different story. The Hulstrian Empire remained stable yet it's sister branch over at the Holy Luthori Empire were facing some problems; in the Kingdom of Yishalem, a vassel state under the then Holy Luthori Emperor William IV, became subject to revolutionary and republic sentiment by disgruntled parties who were unable to prevent Yishalem from becoming a constitutional monarchy. These revolutionaries were able to successfully gain enough seats in the Yishalem legislature to abolish the Kingdom and established a Jewish Republic; the revolutionaries also withdrew from the "Treaty of Yishalem" which had created the legal bond between Yishalem and Luthori. By doing this however, they broke a provision within the Treaty of Yishalem that stated if the vassel state were to withdraw, they would face military action from the Holy Luthori Empire. As per with the withdrawel, Luthori went to war with Yishalem, and this conflict would last for another decade. Outside nations remained out of the conflict upon request from Holy Luthori Emperor at the time who wanted to make this conflict as regional as possible. Luthori in the end would come out the victor, crushing the rebellion though not without cost.

Reding Plight of 2873[]

Bartholomäus, Duke of Strauss

The Imperial Crownlands of Greater Hulstria in the late 2860s was fairly stable in terms of the political specturm in Kien; the aristocratic elements of the Fascist Authority Party and the federalists a the Christian Liberal Party were exchanging rounds of power in the office of the Governor-General of Greater Hulstria while the Imperial Hulstrian Party remained firm at the office of the Head of Government, the Staatsminister. With concerns to the Governor-Generalship, this story of back and forth victories had been true for the past century with the two parties being elected to the top political job in the Imperial Crownlands every few electoral cycles. Friedrich Reding, the Chairman of the Liberal-Demokratische Partei, would change this pattern in the early 2870s; Reding elected as the 32nd Governor-General of Greater Hulstria with the backing of the Fascist Authority Party in the September 2872 general elections; Frederick, Duke of Labsburg decided not to run for a 4th term as Governor-General, allowing Reding to position himself to become the frontrunner in the elections. The Imperial Hulstrian Party and the People's Freedom Party also put their support behind the Reding; these four parties were together in a political coalition in the Imperial Diet and the LDA had prior supported the Duke of Labsburg's campaign for Governor-General, including supporting cabinets with the Imperial Hulstrian Party as Staatsminister. While the liberal democrats had different social and environmental policy than the more conservative FAP and KHP, the parties agreed mainly on economics and defense. Friedrich Reding, who had earlier proposed a very progressive tax system that gave him negative press from both political parties and media (Reding would later remove this proposal), would join another initiative to change landscape of Hulstria. Reding proposed doing away with the traditional unity cabinet government coalitions in favor of a new system of "bloc governments", cabinet created on the basis of alliances, not unity. Needless to say many political parties were vehemently opposed to the idea of ending unity governments; some political leaders even saw Reding's position as un-Hulstrian and believed that his views would tarnish the office of Governor-General. Friedrich Reding did not back down from this policy and continued to propose bloc cabinets, excluding the likes of the Christian Liberals and the Constitutional Independents. Frederick von Labsburg, still the chairman of the Fascist Authority Party, was against breaking unity coalitions, and made this clear to Reding; other party leaders who had endorsed him in the 2872 general elections also pushed for Reding to back down from this venture. Friedrich Reding in turn ignored these calls and further isolated himself from his allies by making questionable public press conferences denouncing the modern Hulstrian system of government. In the Imperial Diet's response to Reding's tirades, the Staatsminister of Greater Hulstria, Bartholomäus, Duke of Strauss, called a special session with the cabinet to discuss the events transpired by the then Governor-General reding. The Duke of Strauss also privately held a session with Klaus Gustav IV at Fliederbrunn Palace and though while the Emperor did not break his apolitical status publically, he did give consent to actions against Reding "to act in the best interests of Hulstria", thus allowing the Duke of Strauss greater power to tackle the effort to remove Reding from power. The rest of the work was then devolved to the Imperial Diet and the other political party leaders in opposition to Reding.
