The monarchs of Trigunia have come in several different forms throughout the history of Trigunia. Trigunian monarchy dates from the first Deltarian colony in Trigunia, the Duchy of Chadonia, which later grew to encompass the entirety of Trigunia as the Great Princedom of Trigunia, the territory's name under Deltarian colonial rule. When Trigunia gained independence in the 20th century, it did so as a republic. The first monarch following independence was Konstantin I of the House of Kommenus, who titled himself as "Emperor and Autocrat of all Trigunians" from 2308 until 2320; his successor Aleksey I did the same. There is debate regarding the legitimacy of these rules due to the fact that they technically ruled from being elected as President of Trigunia. Monarchist claim that these two in fact ruled as sovereigns but is generally refuted by republicans and contemporary historians.

The monarchy in Trigunia has been a hotly contested subject, not just ideologically between the left and right but also between monarchist themselves. Some monarchs in Trigunia have utilized the traditional and generally accepted title of "Great Prince and Tsar" while others have gone for the more "Imperial" version of the title, the "Emperor and Autocrat of all Trigunians". While both titles are technically recognized as titles of the monarchy of Trigunia, the usage of Prince and Great Tsar is generally more accepted and recognized by the Nobility of Trigunia.

History[]

Trigunian monarchy originated with the Duchy of Chadonia, a colony of Great Deltaria on the western tip of the island of Chadonia. The first monarch of all of Trigunia was Gavril I of the Great Principality of Trigunia, the Deltarian colony established in 1735 and claiming all of Trigunia's territory. Deltarian monarchy ended when Trigunia gained its independence in 1954. Monarchy would only be restored in 2308 under the Kalopian House of Kommenus, who implemented an Augustan-style system of government under Konstantin I and his successor Aleksey I.

Monarchy was restored 200 years later when Aleksandr I once again took the title of "Emperor and Autocrat of all Trigunians" but his reign lasted shortly. In the 2580s, approximately 80 years following the crowning of Aleksandr I, the House of Kommenus was restored and Oskars I took the throne. Oskars I was deposed shortly thereafter and the former King of Hutori, Khariton I (Harold I), was placed on the throne and began utilizing the traditional title of Tsar and Great Prince. Khariton I proved to be less of a monarch and more of a brutal dictator just as he had been in Hutori and within a the next decade was ousted from Trigunia. His Royal Northern Highness Andrei I took over the role of monarch, but dropped the usage of the term "Tsar" and solely used "Great Prince", his reign however was short lived.

After the collapse of the Government in the 2660s, the ethnic Hulstrian minority, living in Trigunia since the time of Aleksandr I, rallied much of the Trigunian nobility around the idea of crowning Heinrich I of Hulstria as the new Great Prince. Heinrich used his authority as Great Prince to avert a second governmental crisis a decade into his reign and thus prevented the similar ousting that had occurred just ten short years prior. Under an agreement with Deltaria, who still claimed its former colony, the Deltarian Czar was granted the title of Tsar of Trigunia, effectively establishing Trigunia as a diarchy with two monarchs (though the Tsar held only symbolic power).

In the 2980s, the title of Tsar was added to the title of the monarch, thus the title officially became the Great Prince & Tsar of Trigunia.

Recent claimants to the title of Great Prince and Tsar are the House of Perezhogin, in which ruled briefly before being removed in a series of military-style actions. Other prominent claimants include descendants of the House of Kommenus, the House of Rothingren-Traugott and the House of Doroshenko. Trigunian nobility is handled by the Imperial Senate of Nobles who in turn appoints the "ruling" State Council, the advisors to the sitting Great Prince and Tsar.

In June, 4613 the House of Kharzin was placed on the throne starting with Androniki I, in October, 4614 the Great Prince and Tsar married Grand Duchess Olga Perezhogin and combined the former House of Perezhogin to create the new House of Kharzin-Perezhogin. In August, 4618 the people of New Endralon and Kizenia (NEK) voted to join a monarchical union with Trigunia and Androniki I became the "Domnitor and Great Voivode of New Endralon and Kizenia". This officially formed the Royal Confederation of Northern Keris and was a confederation between NEK and Trigunia. In 4688 the House of Kharzin-Perezhogin was restored to the throne and Volkov I became the Great Prince and Tsar and he was the last Kharzin-Perezhogin to reign as Great Prince and Tsar.

In late December 5365, the Imperial Senate of Nobles convened, the largest since the abolition of the monarchy and agreed that the title of Tsar and Great Prince (or the less used alternative "Great Prince and Tsar") was the only title to be utilized. The Imperial Senate also determined that they would revert to the briefly utilized, but more historical Supreme Privy Council (Rodshyan: Верховный тайный совет; Verkhovnyy taynyy sovet). In 5422 monarchy was restored under the Rothingren dynasty. As the mainline House of Rothingren-Traugott-Okatori branch was believed to be extinct, the throne was offered to Lilianna Mária I of the House of Rothingren-Ludvig-Syldavia, monarch of New Endralon and Kizenia, reestablishing a personal union between the two nations.
