The National Movement is a fascist political party in Luthori founded in 4802 by Count William of Hurrington.
It is a dynastic party led by the Hurrington family.
Initially a fringe group, the party rose to prominence quickly under the leadership of Count William of Hurrington. He is elected Imperator for the first time in 4811 and in 4813, a government led by the National Movement is sworn in.
The National Movement took part in a multiple cabinets from 4813 until 4850. It managed to pass laws mandating racial segregation or strengthening to powers of the police and the army. Some of these laws were quickly repealed a few years later, when the far-right had lost its majority to moderate parties.
From 4850, the NM is excluded from power by the other parties. However, its influence remains strong and Luthori remains a very conservative country.
Some of the positions of the NM were adopted by the other parties, like climate change denial. Other policies like racial segregation are only supported by the White Rose, a more moderate far-right party.
History
A fringe group (4802-4804)
Count William of Hurrington is elected MP in the 4802 election on the Right Coalition list. He decides to leave the White Rose soon after that and creates his own party: the National Movement.
At the start, the party had few members. The far-right militants were sometimes engaged in street fights against far-left militants on the streets of Luthori. The party launched The Patriotic Alternative, their far-right newspaper.
The National Movement has no success and can't reach the required number of signatures to be on the ballots. The party gains 0.05 % of the votes in the two 4803 early elections.
First electoral successes (4805)
Surfing over the wave of dissatisfaction due to the constant early elections, the party gains support, especially in the region of Shipleyriding and manages to elect five deputies in the 4805 parliamentary election with 3.31 % of the votes.Count William of Hurrington gains 3.05 % of the votes in the imperatorial election.
The 4805 local elections are also a sucess. The party gains 476 local councillors. Concerning the regional elections, the party was on the ballots only in Shipleyriding. In other regions, the party couldn't reach the required number of signatures.
The National Movement becomes the third party in Shipleyriding with 15.63 % of the votes and 15 seats.
The party sits in the opposition for 5 years.
Breakthrough in the 4810 elections
The National Movement makes another breakthrough in these elections.
Hurrington gains 20 % of the votes in the imperatorial election and is qualified for the run-off. He is, however, not elected Imperator and gains 40 % of the votes in the second round, facing Duke Marcus Weston.
In the 4810 Imperatorial election, the NM gains 20.30 % of the votes and 31 seats. The Marcus Weston III Cabinet stays in power as no coalition can be made.
The regional and local elections are also a victory for the party. The NM gains two governors: Emma of Hurrington in Middenriding and Jake Crawler in Erneshire. The White Rose and the Liberal Conservative Party agreed to form coalition with the National Movement. The party now takes part in two regional cabinets.
4811: Hurrington is elected Imperator
An early election took place in 4811. In the first round, Hurrington ends up second with 18 % of the votes. However, in the second round, he unexpectedly wins against the incumbent Duke Marcus Weston with 57 % of the votes.
During his term, Hurrington kept criticizing the Marcus Weston III Cabinet, at the time a minority government.
4813: First Cabinet led by William of Hurrington
The 4813 imperatorial election is a defeat for Hurrington. He loses his re-election by a close margin and gains 49.62 % of the votes.
The parliamentary election leads to a record-high number of votes for the far-right.
After the election, three parties formed a cabinet with the National Movement: the LCP, APP and HPL. The cabinet banned interracial banned homosexual sex, civil marriages and decided that candidates must be of a certain race/religion to have any place in the military. Corporal punishment was also implement in the judiciary system.
The coalition quickly explodes: the two APP ministers resigned one month after the formation of the government, in 4813. The cabinet kept governing as a minority government until the 4815 election.
4815-4823: in the opposition
Although the NM stayed the first party, the far-right lost votes in the election. A unity cabinet composed of 5 parties led by James Manstad took office. The new government reversed the ban of interracial sex,as well as the legalisation of torture and corporal punishment.
4823-4829: participation in the Birkenhead I Cabinet
The 4823 elections are a defeat for the party, which loses 13 seats. However, the far-right Conservative Liberal Party gained a record-high number of votes at the time. This allowed a majority government to be formed with the CLP and NM.
Count William of Hurrington became Deputy Imperial Seal Bearer. The government restored judicial corporal punishment and banned interracial sex again. Discrimination against minorities was implemented for government hiring. Multiple citizenship was banned.
In July 4828, the National Movement gained just over 10 percent of the votes and suffered another defeat.
4829-4838 : resurgence of the NM while in the opposition
In May 4829, the party returns to the opposition, as a liberal, centre-right cabinet takes power. The new Briggs I Cabinet repealed most of the laws passed under the Birkenhead cabinet.
In April 4833, after the dissolution of the CLP, the National Movement becomes the first party again, with only 17.63 % of the votes. However, Hurrington still can't win the imperatorial election. In June 4833, the party gains another six seats. After months of negotiations, the antti-fascist Line I Cabinet is formed by right-wing and far-left parties.
The NM manages to pass a law banning multiple citizenship and granting citizenship only to White Hosians, before it is repealed one year later.
The June and November 4837 elections are other victories for the National Movement which reaches 48 seats and 30.61 % of the votes.
Hurrington II Cabinet: 4838-4842
The Hurrington II Cabinet is formed in January 4838 with the White Rose. Count William of Hurrington becomes Imperial Seal Bearer. The biggest reforms of the government were the implementation of racial segregation, the censorship of medias and the implementation of judicial corporal punishment.
A wave of anti-governmental protests erupted in 4840. The Deputy Imperial Seal Bearer Jake Crawler decided to ban all left-wing demonstrations in the country.
In the 4842 election, the National Movement stayed the first party with 25 % of the votes, but lost 10 seats. The government parties won 60 seats, not enough for a majority. At the same time, the imperatorial election was won by William of Hurrington against the far-left candidate Trevor Hale.
Hurrington III Cabinet: 4843-4849
A new cabinet that included the far-right Authoritarian Fascist Union was formed by Hurrington in 4843. The cabinet pursued the far-right reforms of the previous Hurrington II Cabinet. Birth right was implemented and reform only allowing White Hosians to have positions of command in the army was passed.
However, in 4846 until 4849, a political crisis erupted as the AFU abstained or support two left-wing reforms going against the government plans. A deal between the three parties was made and led to the formation of the Middleton I Cabinet in March 4849, after two early elections where the government kept its majority.
Most of the left-wing reforms were repealed in 4849.
Leadership of Mary of Hurrington (4851-4882)
As Count William of Hurrington was becoming old, he chose his daughter, Mary of Hurrington to lead the party. The husband of Mary, James of Hurrington, was the candidate of the party for the imperatorial elections. He was elected three times and ran in 13 elections. During her leadership, the party was also excluded from participating in a national government, only gaining power at the local level.
In 4851, after Mary took the lead, the party experienced a resurgence. James of Hurrington was elected in the first round of the 4851 Luthorian imperatorial election, being the only right-leaning candidate in the election. The party scored 19.35 % of the votes at the same time in the parliamentary election. James of Hurrington was re-elected triumphantly in 4855 but also in 4858.
However, the resurgence was short-lived as the party fell to 12.5 % of the votes in 4855 until an historic low of 9.86 % in 4864. From there, the party gradually recovered and gained 18.69 % of the votes in 4873 Luthorian parliamentary election.
In 4876, James of Hurrington beat the incumbent Imperator Lauren Weston in the first round of the election and won two-thirds of the votes in the runoff against the liberal candidate. He served for two years before an early election was called.
In 4879 and 4880, the NM reached a record high number of votes under the leadership of Mary gaining respectively 23.48 and 26.76 % of the votes.
Leadership of John of Hurrington (4882-4920)
In 4882, John of Hurrington was chosen by Mary of Hurrington to become the new leader of the National Movement.
The following election in 4885 is a failure for the NM, which gains only 18 % of the votes.
The NM receives steady results and is excluded from governmental participation by the other parties, also at the duchy level.
After the 4896 parliamentary election, the NM decides to grant its confidence and supply to the Stinson I Cabinet.
In 4904, the NM decides to remove its parliamentary support but the cabinet stays in power for 6 more years.
In 4905, the NM candidate Lee Tami qualifies for the second round in the imperatorial election. He then scores below 30 % of the votes in the second round against Paige Weston.
At the local level, the NM starts cooperating with the White Rose and other right-wing to far-right parties from 4905. After the 4810 Luthorian local elections, the party participates in 3 duchy governments.
In 4914, the party makes large losses and its worst electoral result since 4805, below 10 % of the votes. A few months later, an early election is called and the NM manages to regain some of the votes it had lost, bouncing to 14 % of the votes. The NM provided supply and confidence to the Romney I Cabinet in exchange for policy concessions.
The 4915 Luthorian local elections are the first duchy elections since the reform granting 25 seats to the largest party in each duchy. The NM becomes the first party in Middenriding and passes far-right reforms, with the support of the Luthorian Conservative Party.
From 4917, after the fall of the Romney I Cabinet, the party is back in the opposition.
The 4919 election is a tough blow for the NM, which falls below 10 % of the votes again.
Ahead of the local elections, John of Hurrington forms the Patriotic Union with another far-right party before giving the presidency of the National Movement to his daughter Louise.
Leadership of Louise of Hurrington (4920-today)
When Louise of Hurrington takes control of the party in 4920, the situation is bad for the NM which makes its worst result since 4805 in the 4920 Luthorian local elections.
In the 4927 elections, the party manages to gain 15.89% of the vote and forms the Attridge I Cabinet with the Luthorian Workers Party. The cabinet made interracial sex illegal and stopped asylum seekers at the border.
From 4932 until 4936, the NM participates in the Attridge II Cabinet. The new cabinet banned contraceptives for religious reasons and decided carry out executions in public and/or broadcast on television.
The NM is briefly in the opposition from 4936 to 4941 before taking part in the Brewer I Cabinet. The government passed socially conservative authoritarian reforms. The powers of the police were expanded, divorce conditions were restricted, adoption was restricted to heterosexual couples and positive discrimination was banned.
From 4946, the party sits in the opposition.
