History

The death of President Salvar Freymannsson in February 4720 signalled the end of almost 25 years of authoritarian rule known as the ‘New State’. With no obvious successor, a hastily formed Constituent Assembly was established under the leadership of Freymannsson’s Economic Minister, Steinar Vilhjálmsson. The Assembly published a draft Constitution that largely returned to the political institutions and structures that had existed before 4694. The constitution was approved in a national plebiscite in June 4720 by 93% of the electorate. Founded in October of that year, National Renewal was one of 24 new political parties established to contest the first general election of March 4721.

The party aimed to continue many of the more successful policies of the New State era, albeit within the context of democratic principles. Following a campaign dominated by domestic policy, National Renewal secured an overwhelmingly majority in the Alþingi.
