Solentia, officially the United Plurinational Republic of Solentia, is a country located in Southeast Majatra. Its five states span from Kalopia to the Sea of Lost Souls bordering with Kafuristan to the north, Istalia to south-east and Kalopia to the west covering 927,000 square kilometers. Solentia has a generally temperate climate, however, its southern regions are known for their warmer summers. Solentia is densely populated, with its 96.62 million people situated mainly in the western and southern flatlands of the country. The population remains largely rural, although throughout its history highly educated urban elites have often exercised political power, excluding marginalised and often highly tribalised rural areas. The population is multicultural, although those of Majatran ethnicity and Ahmadi religion predominate. Its capital is Oda.

For much of the 5th millennium Solentia was ruled largely by a Luthorian speaking elite but from the late 47th century Solentia's ethnic Majatran population began to reassert its numerical dominance and slowly restored its rich native culture that has been suppressed since the Empire of Quanzar.

Etymology[]

In Modern Majatran the name for the Luthorianized "Solentia" is al-Sahil meaning "the Coast" to refer to the large presence of coasts in Solentia's history.

History[]

Main article: History of Solentia

The earliest human activity in what is now Solentia can be traced back to ~50,000BCE. Since then there has been continuous human habitation of the area. By 6,000BCE proto-agricultural cultures had emerged with the development of urban civilization by 3,500BCE, although this early civilization collapsed for unknown reasons in around 1,500BCE.

Classical Period and Augustan Era[]

From 1,500 until the coming of the Ahmadi's in 1,250CE Solentia was typically dominated by external peoples. This included the Kalopians (1100-205BCE), the Cildanians (205-95BCE), The Jelbo-Tukarics (47-464CE) and the Augustan Empire (464-1250). The Augustan Empire introduced Hosianism to Solentia.

Ahmadi Period[]

After the fall of the Ahmadi Caliphate in the mid-15th century, the Empire of Quanzar, ruled by a dynasty native to Solentia, dominated eastern Majatra until the early 20th century. Majatran culture flourished, but eventually the Empire succumbed to corruption, decadence, poor leadership and increasing interference from Artanian colonial power.

Totalitarianism[]

The decline of the Quanzar Empire coincided with the rise of Artanian colonial powers. The activities of these colonial powers ensure that between the 20th and 47th centuries Solentia was an culturally, politically and linguistically an Artanian nation in the heart of the Majatran continent. Solentia increasingly came under the influence of Artanian culture, particularly the culture, language, societal norms, and ethnic identity of Luthorian and Dundorfian people which, also through a massive colonization by part of settlers from Artania, determined the total de-Majatranization and de-Ahmadization of the country.

From the late 23rd century an overlapping set of statist ideologies were developed in Solentia. Heavily influenced by other ideologies from around Terra, these ideologies were consistent in a worship of the state and single party rule most notably in the form of the Archonic Solentia Party. These parties further cemented the Artanianisation of Solentia through attacks on the historical record of Solentia and the Solentian people and through choosing to use the Luthorian language.

Abjurant Era[]

After the period of totalitarianism, the Luthorian settler population dominated politics in Solentia for over two thousand years. However, during this time the Luthorian and Dundorfian populations were primarily urban based, and remote rural and mountainous areas continued to adhere to the Ahmadi faith and Majatran ethnicity, as shown in the census return from 3463.

Reemergence of Majatran Identity and the Modern Era[]

Tayyib al-Kaba, elected as Head of State in 4693 occupies a special place in modern Solentian history as the first openly ethnic Majatran to be Head of State. For the first time in millenia the dominance of Luthori speaking elites had been thrown off and this signalled the beginning of the Majatranisation of Solentia. Until 4868 Solentia was usually governed by parties led by ethnic Majatrans adhering to Ahmadi religious beliefs, sidelining the once dominant Artanian Luthorian speaking community.

The Anarchy 4868-5005[]

However over the next few centuries there were periodic periods of largely one party rule, often led by dictators from the Artanian community. The period 4868 - 4977 saw three dictatorships, firstly that of the left-wing United Workers Party (4868-4893), secondly by the right-wing Fascist Party (4893-4959) and finally by the left-wing National Communist Party (4959-4977). All periods of one party rule saw armed opposition from Tribal and Ahmadi elements in society. In the 4970's many of these Ahmadi groups united in the Eastern Alliance, eventually overthrowing the National Communists after seizing the capital Oda in 4976. This was followed by a further period of civil war that lasted through the the 4980's. This period is often referred to as the anarchy. It saw economic collapse, continued bouts of civil war and the large scale emigration of many of the remaining Luthorian and Dundorfian speakers. Urbanisation went into reverse as many Solentians opted to live in the countryside. However this turmoil allowed Ahmadi religious figures to gain greater respect within the population, converting many back to the old religion. Additionally the reverse urbanisation and emigration of Luthorian elites saw Majatran re-emerge as the most commonly spoken language in Solentia.

Majatran Democracy and Little Anarchy 5005 - 5078[]

The 51st century saw the first period of stability in Solentia since before the start of the Anarchy. The Coalition for the Future was the first truly democratic party to govern since the late 49th century. Led by Majatran Ahmadi leaders, it aimed to unite all Solentians under a tolerant and progressive democratic banner. However, although democratic, it was led by Husam Al-Adili for 73 years in what was effectively a one party state. During his time Solentia experienced immigration for the first time in hundreds of years as the economy was steadily rebuilt. Immigrants from Malivia and Indrala came in large numbers eventually numbering several million.

General Tauqi, Abadi Insurgency and Kafuristan Intervention[]

Main article: Second Solentian Civil War

After the collapse of the Coalition for the Future a second shorter period of anarchy returned to Solentia until General Tauqi gained controlled of the capital in 5109. After the progressive politics of the Coalition of the Future, General Tauqi moved the country in a conservative direction, introducing Ahmadi religious law and decentralizing power to the tribes in order to reduce violence across the country. However as the 5110's developed Abadi tribes in northern Solentia began an armed insurrection against General Tauqi, supported by Kafuristan.

This eventually led to the Kafuri Intervention in northern Solentia in 5126, with Kafuri soldiers rolling across the border to support Abadi insurgents. General Tauqi was killed in 5127. With the collapse of the central state under the Kafuri onslaught, the United Ahmadi Salvation Front (UASF) was formed by hardline Ahmadists to restore central authority, seizing the capital Oda in 5137 and eventually agreeing a peace deal with Kafuristan and the Abadi tribes in 5138. While Solentia remained highly conservative, economic reforms were introduced to revitalise the Solentian economy and to encourage investment and manufacturing as Solentia became a source of cheap deregulated labour.

The Emirate and the Third Solentian Civil War[]

Main article: Third Solentian Civil War

The UASF continued to govern, introducing an elected Emir in 5142. Solentia became significantly more stable and eventually the Emirate became hereditary in 5198, restoring the first hereditary Ahmadi Head of State to Solentia since the collapse of the Empire of Quanzar in 1934. Emir Wakeem Khan became the Emir in 5146 and initiated a series of progressive reforms. However, this led to increased opposition, particularly from radical Ahmadists which led to the formation of the Jaish-e Ahmad and the outbreak of the Third Solentian Civil War in 5252.

Geography[]

Physical map of Solentia

Solentia is located in the south-eastern part of Majatra and it is charaterized by the Dinaric Mounts running from the Istalian border in south-east to the Kalopian and Kafuri borders in north-west, where began to run alongside the easternmost portion of the Heraklian Alps, and which divide Solentia in two main areas. The north-eastern one is divided in a north-western plateau which descends towards the east in a large coastal plain. The southern portion is charaterized by the ramified Salvena Range in the east while in the west and in the coastal area extends open river plains.

Between the mountain ranges there are some other plateau and highlands. It has a continental climate.

Climate and Geographical Features[]

Mt. St

Mt. St. Katherine with Deep Lake at its base. Volcanoes like this are commonplace on Solentia. Alpine Lakes provide tourism opportunities.

Solentia is a temperate country, heavily influenced both by the artic streams coming from the southern Perartic Ocean and by the hotter majatran climate of the north, which contribute to the presence of several different climate areas in the country. The south is rainy and coldest while the north is drier, also due to the central high mountain ranges which stop the rains from the south generating thus a rain shadow on the northern areas which climate, however, is mitigate by the average altitude of the plateau and by many rivers originating from the numberous glaciers.

Despite this farming is very crucial for Solentia and it is practiced in all the areas in the south as well as in the north. The valleys provide rich farmland even in the drier area.

Solentia is very Volcanic and the central and norther mountain ranges contains several volcanoes, some of them active.

Foreign relations[]

SolentiaNeighbours

Solentia (brown) with Kalopia (west), Kafuristan (north) and Istalia (south-east).

Solentia has borders with three nations. To the west is Kalopia, to the north is Kafuristan and to the south-east is Istalia. Solentia has varying relations with all three. Istalia, despite being a Hosian nation, has had friendly relations with Solentia since the Istalian-Solentian Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Economic Development was agreed in 4645. In more recent years the Solentia's agreed to host Istalian military forces in Solentia and typically purchases its military equipment from Istalia or under license from Istalian companies. Solentia signed up to the Kalopian Official Neutrality and Diplomatic Treaty in 5111. Solentia maintains friendly nations with both Kalopia and Istalia and the respective borders remain largely demilitarised.

Solentian relations with Kafuristan are less straight forward. There is historic tension due to Solentia being largely Israist Ahmadi, while the Kafuri's are mostly Abadi. There has been cross-border friction as well which resulted in a cross-border conflict in the 5120's which was not resolved until the signing of a peace treaty in 5138. However, in 5249 Kafuristan and Solentia signed the Treaty of Bovatho which is a comprehensive diplomatic, trade and non-aggression Treaty between the two countries, a sign of signficiantly improved relations.

Military[]

The Solentian National Defence Forces are the armed and police forces of Solentia. They consist of elements that belong to the Ministry of Defence, and policing elements that report to the Ministry of the Interior, including the National Directorate of Security intelligence services.

Economy[]

Main article: Economy of Solentia

After the anarchy Solentia resembled a failed state, with its economy largely collapsed and much of the population reduced to subsistence agriculture and bartering. However after the return of a semblance of stable government in the 52nd century the government made efforts to restore the Solentian economy with some success.

Agriculture[]

OPIUM-Solentia

Subsistence agriculture has been important in Solentia for hundreds of years, including the raising of cereals and livestock. However since the 5130's Solentia has become more famous for its production of the opium poppy and Solentia has become one of the largest exporters of poppy. The poppy crop is largely traded or smuggled overseas, in particular to Kalistan.

Fishing[]

Given its location Solentia has access to fishing and whaling waters.

Manufacturing[]

Solentia has established itself as one of the most important centres of the manufacturing of cheap clothing in Terra. In 5138 major legislation was introduced that stripped many basic rights from workers and made Solentia a desirable location for clothing manufacturers.

Shipping and Regional Trade[]

There are a number of major ports on Solentia's southern and eastern coasts which form an important part of trade routes from Seleya to the rest of Majatra. A lot of this activity is however linked to criminal organisations that have used the instability and corruption in Solentia to base high-end smuggling operations out of Solentian ports. Businesses and private security contractors from neighbouring Istalia are also heavily involved in shipping and much of the regional trade in Solentia.

Resource Extraction[]

In the south-western province of Caistra oil extraction form an important part of the local economy.

Tourism[]

From the 5240's tourism has emerged as an increasingly important sector following encouragement by the government with relaxation of strict passport laws and the legalising of the sale of alcohol in hotels.

Foreign Remittances[]

A large number of Solentians, mostly men, work abroad in Istalia and Kafuristan. These men will often work for a numbers of years in areas such as construction and send a proportion of their earnings back to family members in Solentia. These remittances form an important part of the local economy, especially in poorer parts of Solentia. However, there are issues associated with as many Solentians work abroad illegally without the correct documentation, especially in Istalia.

Language[]

Main article: Languages of Solentia

For many years Luthorian was the official language of Solentia, with Dorvish Dundorfian also common. However, these were elite languages largely spoken in urban areas. As of the 5220's and following several centuries of the Majatranisation of Solentia, Majatran has once more been restored as the official and most spoken language. However, there are different dialects of Majatran spoken, Solentian, Kafrui and Dudmani. A large number of other languages are also spoken, with Kalopian and Istalian enjoying some localised recognition. Luthorian remains an elite language and is widely spoken in urban areas. Other languages have recently been introduced by migrant groups.

Religion[]

Since the Majatranisation of Solentia, Ahmadism has returned to its historic position as the dominant faith in Solentia, however there are a variety of faiths present in the country.

Ahmadism[]

Main article: Ahmadism in Solentia

Around 77% of the population of Solentia are Ahmadi. Most are Israists (61%), however most Kafuri speakers are Abadi (13%). There are smaller numbers who adhere to Halawism and other dissident off-shoots of Ahmadism.

Hosianism[]

Main article: Hosianism in Solentia

Hosianism has a long history in Solentia having been introduced during the Augustan Empire. The Hosian faithful are divided between a number of Churches although the Aurorian Patriarchal Church and Abjurant denominations have the highest profile due to their international relationships.

The Aurorian Patriarchal Church is split between Istalian speaking congregations who follow the Theognisian Rite and Kalopian speaking communities who follow the Augustan Rite.

The most important Abjurant Church the Luthorian Church Solentia Synod. The main church of Solentia, the Solentian Grand Cathedral, in Metapontum, is shared by the two major Hosian denominations.

The Aurorian Patriarchal Church is the largest denomination (5.5%), the Apostolic Church of the East is the second largest (4%). It tends to have a lower profile as it is more based in rural areas amongst Majatran speakers and does not have the same international profile as other churches.

Other Religions[]

As well as Ahmadism and Hosianism, more recent immigrants have introduced other religions into Solentia including Geraja, Daenism and Yeudism. Although small, such religions are often prominent in major urban areas, particularly coastal cities with ports.
