Zardugal (Zardic: Zardujo or Zardio), officially known as the Republic of Zardugal (Zardic: Respubliko de Zardujo or Respubliko de Zardio), is a nation located on the continent of Majatra. It is situated on the southwestern coast of Majatra. It has a population of 94,771,309[1] according to a census conducted within Zardugal. According to a geological survey conducted by the government of Zardugal and recognized by the World Congress, Zardugal rates at 1,065,300 km2. Zardugal is a member of the World Congress and is in Security Council Group B.

Much of Zardugal was part of the mighty ancient Augustan Empire, and later an integral part of the Ahmadi Caliphate. Modern-day Zardugal is a developing country and a multi-cultural society. It was a founding member of the pan-continental Majatran Alliance and of the Majatran Security Cooperation Council. The nation consists of five territories: Kasio, Venetio, Kastelo, Dirakio and Karintio. It's capital is Belegejo, situated in Dirakio.

Zardugal once possessed one of the worlds leading economies but years of economic mismanagement and poor financial planning have dwindled its financial power. Despite this, the Zardic government still maintains a number of institutions which provide it a sense of stability Zardugal's biggest exports include biofuels, raw minerals and materials, pharmaceuticals and agricultural products; it also includes a large banking and financial sector.

Etymology[]

Sard intaglio

Augustan intaglio made of sard depicting an Augustan empress

The name "Zardugal" is an exonym, while natively Zardugal is called Zardujo or Zardio. The Luthorian word Zardugal is ultimately derived from the classical Selucian word sardius meaning carnelian or sard. The Western part of the Lake Majatra was called Sardia during the later years of the Augustan Empire, and the medieval Kingdom of Zardugal, one of the states that emerged from the Rekonkero, was sometimes known as Sarduyulom in the Old Augustan language. The name originates from sard-, meaning "sard" or "Zard", + -uy-, meaning "container of" (a suffix used to form country names), and the diminutive suffix -ul-. The Old Augustan word Sarduyulom is the ultimate source for the exonym "Zardugal".

The Zardic language name of the country is derived from the demonym "Zard" (Zardo in Zardic). Country names derived from ethnic groups end in either -io or, more archaically, in -ujo (meaning "container of") in Zardic, and Zardugal is known as Zardio or Zardujo, Both are considered correct and can be used interchangeably, though the latter is seen as somewhat more poetic.

History[]

Zardugal emerged as a political entity after the fall of the Ahmadi Caliphate, when several Hosian kingdoms, successors of the old Augustan Empire, conquered most Zardic territory in a process known as the Rekonkero ("Reconquest") which culminated in the establishment of the Kingdom of Zardugal. It has a long tradition of republicanism, and under the Federation of Zardugal it became a Great Power, controlling a large territorial empire in Dovani, Temania, and Vascania, as well as exercising hegemony in Majatra. The loss of the colonial empire and of Majatran hegemony have led to the emergence of a new ideology, Augustan nationalism, which saw Zardugal as the heir of the ancient Augustan Empire. Augustan nationalism has dominated Zardic politics for centuries, although recently Zardugal has started to move away from that ideology.

Geography[]

Zardugal is located on the Southwestern limb of the Majatran mainland, running from the centre of the Majatra Basin all the way to the Northwest coast. The country shares borders with Vanuku to the north, Jelbania to the east and to the south is Cobura. In the south east, Lake Majatra represents an additional demarcation, bordering the Venetio governorate. Zardugal also has a lengthy coastline to its west facing the Red Bass Ocean. Much of the irrigation in the nation is provided by the enormous inland sea, Lake Majatra, and the two vast rivers, the Korio and Ustaro.

The climate in Zardugal varies between a continental climate in the north, with cold winters, and hot, humid summers and well distributed rainfall patterns, and a more Adriatic climate in the south with hot, dry summers and autumns and relatively cold winters with heavy inland snowfall.

Differences in elevation, proximity to Lake Majatra and large river basins, as well as the exposure to the winds account for climate differences. Northern areas of Zardugal possesses typical continental climate, with air masses from North and Western Majatra which shapes its climatic profile. South and Southwest Zardugal is subject to subtropical influences, however the inland mountain ranges contribute to the cooling down the biggest part of warm air masses.

Executive branch[]

Executive Mansion

The head of state of the Republic of Zardugal is the popularly elected President of the Republic (Zardic: Respublikestro) and serves as the overall leader of the nation. The title respublikestro literally means "leader of the republic" and is sometimes used as a synonym for prezidanto, meaning "president". In 5362 the title was officially adopted for Zardugal's head of state, and in that capacity it is officially translated as "President of the Republic". The Zardic Respublikestro is a largely symbolic office who represents the nation but has little actual political power.

The government of Zardugal (Registaro) is comprised of a number of departments, agencies, and services, headed by 12 Ministers. The head of the executive branch is officially known as the Registarestro, which simply means Head of Government.

Legislative branch[]

The legislative branch of the Republic of Zardugal is comprised of the National Legislative Assembly, also known as the Leĝdonaro, which is a 500 seat legislature lead by the President of the Leĝdonaro (Leĝdonarestro). The President of the Leĝdonaro is appointed by the legislators and has a wide range of responsibilities. The Leĝdonaro is the sole legislative authority in Zardugal and only branch that possesses legislative initiative within the nation. The National Elections Commission (Zardic: Nacia Balota Komisiono) is responsible for managing, overseeing and protecting Zardic elections throughout Zardugal.

Military and law enforcement[]

Military[]

Zardugal was once recognized as one of Terra's military powers, however its armed forces suffered numerous defeats in wars challenging Zardugal's colonial empire or Majatran hegemony. Although Zardugal often rebuilt its armed strength and projected an image of military might, its consecutive defeats have caused its to be seen as a paper tiger. In 5364 the Zardic armed forces were abolished and military spending was reduced to 0, as Zardugal joined Egelion to become one of Terra's only two demilitarized nations. Owing to growing tensions with the far-right regime in Vanuku this policy was reversed only five years later and the new Zardic Defence Forces were established, but with a different focus and military doctrine. At the heart of Zardic defence policy lies the concept of "total national defence", a form of total war whereby every able-bodied adult is expected to participate in armed resistance against an invading force, embodied most clearly in the Zardic Partisans.

Law enforcement[]

The Civil Police Corps of the Republic of Zardugal (Zardic: Korpo de Civila Polico de la Respubliko de Zardujo) was officially established on 5 March 5145, marking a significant turning point in the security forces of the country. Its creation was characterized by the dissolution of all previous police bodies, unifying resources and improving the efficiency of the national security apparatus.

The Civil Police Corps is responsible for ensuring public safety, preserving social order and protecting the rights of citizens of the Republic of Zardugal.

Demographics and Culture[]

Main article: Culture of Zardugal

Zardugal is a multicultural and multiethnic society, partly as a result of Zardugal's former colonial empire as well as immigration, primarily from other Majatran nations.

The dominant ethnic group in Zardugal is the Zardic people, an ethnicity native to Majatra partially descended from the ancient Augustans, as well as from various indigenous groups in the South of Majatra. The largest ethnic minority in Zardugal is formed of the Mallan people, who form around 8% of the population and largely live in the South of the country.

The largest religion in Zardugal is Hosianism, and the Deltarian based Terran Patriarchal Church is the largest Hosian denomination in the nation. The Coburan Apostolic Tewahedo Church, a member of the Apostolic Church of the East, is largely followed by Mallans. Daenism is the second largest religion, being the most widely followed faith in the vast majority of Zardugal's former colonial empire. Several other Majatran religions are also practised, primarily Ahmadism and the Ruhi Faith. A relatively small but growing percentage of the population does not subscribe to any religion, but in spite of this Zardic society is largely secular.
